Relative clauses

A relative clause adds information about a noun. German uses der / die / das (and their case forms) as relative pronouns — they agree with the noun they refer to.

Der Mann, der hier wohnt, ist nett.

The man who lives here is nice.

Die Frau, die ich kenne, ist Ärztin.

The woman whom I know is a doctor.

Das Buch, das ich lese, ist interessant.

The book that I am reading is interesting.

With prepositions, the relative pronoun takes the needed case: mit denen, in der, für den.
