What is the Perfekt?

The structure of the Perfekt is comparable to the present perfect in English

It is formed by using an auxiliary verb sein or haben and the past participle of the main verb

Ich bin gekommen

I came

Sie hat Getränke gekauft

She bought drinks (lit. She has bought drinks)

Forming the perfect participle?

Most verbs have a participle which is formed as follows: ge + verb stern + t

Ich habe einen Kuchen gemacht

I have made a cake

Ich habe in Berlin gebwohnt

I have lived in Berlin

The Perfekt irregular verbs

Some verbs such as kommen and fahren are irregular. These verbs form their past participle as follows: ge- + infinitive

Wann sind die gekommen?

When did you come?

Wir sind nach Italien gefahren?

We went to Italy

The auxiliary verb haben and the Perfekt

Many verbs form the prefect with haben

Ich habe ein UFO gesehen

I saw a UFO

Er hat den Kuchen gegessen

He ate the cake

Hast du meine Tasche genommen?

Did you take my bag?

Wir haben meine Schwester getroffen

We met my sister

When do we use haben?

Verbs of position, expect bleiben, always take auxiliary haben:

Sie haben gesessen

They sat

Wir haben lange gestanden

We stood for a long time

Wir haben in Berlin gewohnt

We have lived in Berlin

Other verbs always use the verb haben:

Reflexive verbs:

Ihr habt euch gewaschen

You had a wash

Du hast dich geirrt

You made a mistake

As well as modal verbs and the verb haben:

Sie haben Glück gehabt

They were lucky

Ich haben immer ein Kind gewollt

I have always wanted a child

In the prefect, the auxiliary verb sein is used with:

Verbs of movement:

Sie ist losgegangen

She left

Sie ist gefahren

She left

The verb bleiben:

Ich bin lange in der Schule geblieben

I stayed at school for a long time

The verbs change of state:

Sie ist dort aufgewachsen

She grew up there

Sie ist rot geworden

She blushed

The perfect of irregular verbs

There is another category of irregular verbs. Their past participle also takes ge- + -en, but the verb in the stem also changes

Wir haben unseren alten Professor getroffen

The vowel in the stem doesn’t always change to o

In some cases, the ei in the stem becomes ie in the perfect

bleiben: Er ist geblieben

to stay: He stayed

schreiben: Wast hast du geschrieben?

Did you speak?

In some cases, the i in the stem becomes u

finden: Er hat einen Schatz gefunden

to find: He found a treasure

springen: Das Kaninchen ist gesprungen?

to jump: The rabbit jumped

The past participle of the halten verbs

The past participle of halten is gehalten. The compound verbs different participles, depending on if they are separable or not.

Separable verbs: prefix + halten, e.g behalten (just same as the infinitive)

Non-separable verbs: prefix + ge + halten, e.g festgehalten
