Nominalization

Formal German often turns verbs into nouns: bauen → der Bau, entscheiden → die Entscheidung. Prepositions like nach, trotz, durch, and während frequently introduce these noun phrases.

Der Bau der Brücke dauerte Jahre.

The construction of the bridge took years.

Nach dem Lesen des Briefes hat er angerufen.

After reading the letter he called.

Trotz des Regens sind wir weitergegangen.

Despite the rain we continued.

Articles and genitive endings matter: des Briefes, der Regierung, des Museums.
